Large Antonov 124 plane that would have been salvaged is actually being disassembled in Russia

The fate of the Antonov An124 large cargo plane, registration RA82042, owned by the Russian company VolgaDnepr, which was the victim of an accident in November 2020, has been updated this week with new photos published on the Internet showing it on Airport to be dismantled from Tolmachevo in Novosibirsk.

The photos below (in the Twitter embed code, waiting to load) show the current situation of the aircraft, with the entire front section separated from the rest of the fuselage and many other parts already removed.

The crash of the AN124

The accident had global repercussions at the time. Immediately after takeoff and landing gear retraction, the compressor of one of the engines was destroyed, causing severe damage to the aircraft’s fuselage from fragments. Then the pilots experienced a failure of communication systems, as well as all electronic systems, including piloting.

The crew brought the plane back for an emergency landing on Runway 25 in Novosibirsk, but the large jet overshot the end of the runway by about 200 meters on landing.

In the summer of 2021, the VolgaDnepr airline reported that it was possible to get the Antonov airworthy again and take it to Ulyanovsk for further repairs at the Aviastar plant. However, the complexity proved beyond the restoration possibilities and the company subsequently decided to withdraw the aircraft from the fleet.

Since it was not possible to bring the structural elements of the fuselage structure back up to date, dismantling of the aircraft began in July. Still, some of its components will come in handy as spare parts for the rest of the Volga fleet.
