Nine people aboard a U.S. Navy P-8A aircraft swam to safety Monday afternoon after their plane overshot the runway and plunged into the sea while landing in Hawaii.
Honolulu first responders rushed to the scene, but there were no reports of injuries.
The plane hovered in Kaneohe Bay in front of Naval Base Hawaii. Its hull appeared to be intact, indicating a low-speed crash into the sea.
The Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) sent out the first warning of a “likely aircraft fire incident” shortly after 2 p.m., according to KITV.
According to Associated Press reports, the P-8A is often used for submarine hunting, reconnaissance and intelligence gathering. It is manufactured by Boeing and shares many parts with the 737 airliner.
The plane crash was reported off the coast of O’ahu around 2 p.m. local time
