Las Vegas Police Search Home in Connection with Tupac Shakur Murder

Las Vegas police raided a home Monday in connection with the investigation into the murder of superstar rapper Tupac Shakur.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department raided a home in Henderson, Nevada, less than 20 miles from the Las Vegas Strip, where 25-year-old Shakur was killed in a 1996 shootout from a passing car.

“LVMPD can confirm that a search warrant was served on July 17, 2023 in Henderson, Nevada, as part of the ongoing investigation into the murder of Tupac Shakur,” Las Vegas Police Department said in a statement. “At this point in time we will have no further comment.”

On the night of September 7, 1996, Shakur and Death Row Records executive Marion “Suge” Knight exited a boxing match at the MGM Grand in a black BMW.

While being stopped at a red light on East Flamingo Road and Koval Lane on the Las Vegas Strip, a white Cadillac pulled up in front of Shakur’s vehicle and opened fire. Shakur was shot multiple times and succumbed to his injuries six days later.

According to Las Vegas police, no one has ever been arrested or charged in the shooting, in part because witnesses refused to cooperate with authorities.

Investigating the Tupac murder

The investigation into Shakur’s assassination has been going on for almost three decades.

In 2019, Greg Kading, a retired Los Angeles police detective, told CBS News Los Angeles that Shakur’s murder had already been solved after Duane Davis – aka Keffe D – confessed his involvement in Shakur’s murder, while being questioned in connection with the murder of Biggie Smalls.

But at the time, Las Vegas police said the case was still an ongoing investigation.

Tupac’s legacy

Last month, Shakur posthumously received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of his contributions to the arts and commitment to racial equality.

In May, the Oakland, California City Council voted unanimously to rename a section of MacArthur Boulevard between Grand Avenue and Van Buren Avenue, where the rapper once lived, the “Tupac Shakur Way.”

The rapper influenced the hip-hop genre and built a global following, selling over 75 million records worldwide and earning six Grammy nominations during his brief five-year recording career.
