Zelensky, if the conflict shifts to Russia, we risk being left alone

Ukraine risks losing the military support of some “great powers” if the battlefield of Russia’s war against Ukraine shifts to Russian territory. This was stated by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview. This was reported by Kyiv Independent. When asked if he thought the war should be shifted to Russia, Zelenskyy said there was a “great risk of being left alone permanently.”

According to the President, Ukraine is trying to improve its relations with the states that have supported Ukraine since the start of the large-scale invasion, stressing that invading Russian territory is a “painful problem” for them. “There are large states in our world, very large states, where they are not on the side of Russia in only one point: the territorial integrity of the state,” Zelenskyy said. “If I consciously order my troops and decide to go to Russian territory, I need to be sure that this state will not be with me. And then you have to think about what is more important now for the people and for Ukraine,” he added.

Taiwan: Foxconn boss Terry Gou will run for president

Terry Gou, the billionaire founder of Foxconn — the maker of Apple’s iPhones and electronic products — has announced that he will run as an independent in Taiwan’s January 2024 presidential election, joining an increasingly tight field of candidates. After the failed attempt in 2020, Gou again tried unsuccessfully to wring the nomination and support from the main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KTM), which has traditionally taken a more conciliatory stance towards China. In today’s press conference announcing his candidacy, Gou said he wants to spend “for cross-strait peace,” drawing on excellent relations with Beijing. His group operates numerous plants in China employing over a million people. KMT nationalists have chosen to focus on Hou Yu-ih, a former police chief and current mayor of New Taipei City, who has around 26% popular support, according to recent polls, despite the Foxconn patron’s courtship . . At the forefront of the forecasts is the incumbent Taiwanese Vice President William Lai, who belongs to the Democratic Progressive Party with around 45% and is known to represent the island’s pro-independence vis-à-vis Beijing. In order to run as an independent, Gou needs to collect a total of 290,000 signatures: in recent months, he has organized many similar events across Taiwan in view of the decision.
