We recently updated how Cleveland intended to pitch to the quarterback. Baker Mayfield new start immediately. Well, according to Jan Rapoport of the NFL Network, Browns unlikely to let Mayfield go if they fail to find a trading partner for a 26-year-old man. 
Cleveland has held talks with teams interested in a trade for Mayfield, Rapoport said, but Mayfield’s 2022 salary of $18.86 million currently prevents a deal from being struck. Rapoport says it’s possible Mayfield’s agent and a potential new team could negotiate a deal that would have a portion of his salary covered by the Browns, but Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported a few days ago that Cleveland was not interested in paying a portion. Mayfield’s fifth-year option salary to facilitate the deal.
The Seahawks are still on the radar after being questioned about a disgruntled quarterback, but they’re looking for a certain price, and it’s assumed the Browns haven’t gotten close to it yet. When the Browns informed Mayfield that they would try to negotiate a trade deal with him, Baker mentioned the Colts as a team of interest and also stated that he was not interested in going to Detroit, the Carolinas or Houston. The Colts, however, took the path of acquiring Matt Ryan in trade with the Falcons.
Another team showing interest in Mayfield is the Steelers, who, as Cabot mentioned, “would jump on” Mayfield if the Browns released him. Newly Acquired Defender Mitchell TrubiskyA relatively inexpensive deal, averaging $7.14 million a year, allows Pittsburgh to pursue the high-profile quarterback in free agency.
Two other factors that may have hindered a deal are the availability of another proven starter, Jimmy Garoppolo, and the surgery Mayfield underwent on his non-throwing shoulder just after the 2021 NFL season. In addition, Cleveland is not expecting a first-round pick in exchange for Mayfield. They know they will have to look elsewhere to make up for any of the first rounds they lost on the acquisition. The Browns will likely continue to work on finding a new home for Mayfield, but Rapoport warns us not to expect them to kill him in an attempt to help. If the perfect trading partner doesn’t emerge, the Browns could stand in good stead by keeping their player in the starting lineup for the last four years if new quarterback Watson faces a suspension ahead of the 2022 season.
