Lawsuit to stop Roger Waters from performing in Brazil

Attorney Ary Bergher, vice president of the Israeli Confederation of Brazil (CONIB), has filed a lawsuit against singer Roger Waters to prevent him from entering the country and performing in the country. The information was confirmed to Folha de S.Paulo this Friday (9) by Bergher himself.

The composer’s farewell tour will end on November 8th at the Mineirão; Tickets are available from R$220.

In the motion, Bergher and two attorneys, in addition to the obstacles, demand that all presentations he makes in Brazil have a police escort. The action was motivated by the fact that Waters wore a Nazi uniform, in black and with red armbands, at a concert in Berlin on May 17.

The German press also reported that during the exhibition the artist displayed on a canvas the names of several deceased, including those of Anne Frank, the Jewish teenager who died in a Nazi concentration camp, and Shireen Abu Akleh, the journalist with Palestine and American Citizenship from broadcaster Al Jazeera, who died in an Israeli operation in May 2022.

The motion submitted by Bergher also cites other statements that made reference to Judaism and National Socialism in performances over the past decade. The lawyer told Folha that he awaits an answer from the authorities the lawsuit was addressed to the Minister of Justice and Public Security, Flávio Dino, on the 29th of last month.

“I applied as a Brazilian and Jewish citizen,” says Bergher. He is blunt about Waters: “He is a Nazi who must be contained and arrested.”

In addition, in the event that Waters enters Brazil, the applicant would like federal and civilian police to be assigned to monitor the artist’s presentations. Waters has six shows scheduled in Brazil between October and November in Brasília, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Curitiba, Belo Horizonte and São Paulo. The performances are part of the farewell tour This is Not a Drill.
