Lee Daniels and Mo’Nique revealed again on Friday night that they put their longtime feud behind them as the former crashed a New York comedy event hosted by its Precious star and their forthcoming collaboration at Netflix -Movie Demon House teased.
“I’m so sorry I hurt you in any way. All of you, and she was my best friend — my best friend,” Daniels told Staten viewers for Mo’Nique’s show Mo’Nique and Friends: April Fools Day with The Queen of Comedy. “You all think that Precious just… That was God working through both of us. And we will fucking do it!”
Daniels then told Mo’Nique that he loves her, with Mo’Nique clarifying that the feeling was mutual.
While Daniels and Mo’Nique famously collaborated on the 2009 film Precious, with the latter earning an Oscar for her role as the title character’s abusive mother, they didn’t speak to each other for the next 13 years. The feud arose from Mo’Nique’s public accusation that Daniels, Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry had attacked her for refusing to promote the film during awards season. That wasn’t in her contract, she explained at the time, and she just didn’t want to spend any time without her family.
Although Daniels and his fellow producers on Precious dismissed Mo’Nique’s claim, as we’ve told you before, he’s preparing to reunite with the actress and comedian on Demon House, with Mo’Nique taking on the role previously played by Octavia Spencer was played. She will play a social worker who helps a family through a series of exorcisms alongside Andra Day, Glenn Close, Rob Morgan, Caleb McLaughlin and Aunjanue Ellis.
Daniels, Tucker Tooley, Pam Williams, Todd Crites and Jackson Nguyen are producing the upcoming film that officially buries the hatchet between Daniels and Mo’Nique, with Greg Renner and Gregoire Gensollen as executive producers. Production starts in June.
