If the CAQ has stabilized the drop in its support despite several broken promises, the Parti Québécois will cement its status as a solution with voters. Meanwhile, liberals sink into indifference.
With 37% of voting intentions, François Legault’s troops saved the furniture despite a difficult start to the mandate, according to a Léger poll commissioned by the Journal.
The abandonment of the 3rd motorway connection, the decline in kindergartens for 4-year-olds, immigration thresholds and the green light for enforcing salary increases for MPs have not diminished the lead of the Caquistes for the time being.
But Paul St-Pierre Plamondon is consolidating his position as number two, a warning for the CAQ. Especially given the enthusiasm people in the Quebec region have for the PQ, which doesn’t seem to be flagging.
“It’s a warning that an alternative is emerging, that its stars are less popular than they were,” analyzes pollster Jean-Marc Léger. You can’t take electorate support for granted, especially when you have 37% of the voting intentions, so you have 63% of Quebecers not voting for you.”
The Battle of Quebec
The PQ appears “quietly as a national solution”, the other parties only achieved a breakthrough in certain regions. “Quebec Solidaire is Montreal or in certain urban areas the PLQ is west of Montreal and the Conservative Party is in the Quebec region,” said Léger’s president.
And the state capital is the scene of a real political battle waged by four parties. Only the liberals are practically excluded from this confrontation. The PSPP team is at the top, followed by the Caquists, followed by those in solidarity with Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois. Éric Duhaime’s Conservatives are currently ranked 4th in Greater Quebec City.
The confused reds
Without a leader, Reds’ voting intentions continue to plummet, garnering just under 13% of support (4% for Francophones). “The PLQ is quietly falling into complete indifference,” says Jean-Marc Léger.
Even liberal voters are confused. As many as 55% of them cannot give an answer when it comes to judging which personality would be the best party leader. In the total population it is 68%.
MP Marwah Rizqy attracts the most interest from citizens, but not from Liberal supporters. It is interim leader Marc Tanguay who dominates the PLQ.
“Liberal voters are orphans right now. With a popularity rating of 13% and these results, it’s in their interest to start their leadership race quickly before they lose interest in the public entirely,” says the pollster.
QS only seduces young people
QS is stable in its voting intentions and gets the majority of its support from young people aged 18-34, citizens who vote little. Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois also achieves a famine score in people aged 55 and over.
“Their strength is young people, their only weakness is young people!” They don’t make it out of the big cities, nor out of customers beyond 35,” stresses Mr. Léger.
methodology
The web survey was conducted June 9-12, 2023 among 1042 Quebecers aged 18 and over. The maximum margin of error is plus or minus 3.03%.
