Leo Jaime, 62, aired this Friday’s Globo Repórter about the prejudice he had suffered in his career. On the show, he highlighted losing jobs because of his looks and shared how he overcame those barriers.
“If you ask permission from others or the world to be happy, you are likely to get tired. Nobody has to like it, nobody has to approve of anything, nobody even has to know what you intend to do. the fear of being judged by others, whether by age, physique, or appearance,” he began.
The artist recalled his participation in the painting Dança dos Famosos from “Domingão”. In an interview with “Globo Repórter” he emphasized that he took the opportunity to overcome his selfcensorship.
“Everything I went through was a very big taboo, and when I went to the ‘Dance of the Famous’ I saw it as an exercise in overcoming this selfcensorship of mine. I had to debut live on TV every Sunday, expose myself physically to the judgment of others,” he explained.
Leo Jaime also pointed out that the changes to his physique have not gone unnoticed throughout his career. According to him, he even lost jobs because of it.
“All my life I was very young and I danced a lot and moved a lot, which was very spontaneous. Over time I gained weight, got a tummy and started to hear criticism. I was on the decline, job offers started to decrease and everything others, all because of my looks,” he stressed.
But Leo Jaime didn’t let prejudice and criticism deter him from his career. For him, as he confirmed in the interview, the comfort zone was never an option.
“I really don’t know what a comfort zone is, actually I’ve never been there. For me, the challenge has become routine,” he concluded.
