Life on : Meet the winners of the BigPicture Natural World Photo Contest umplaneta.globo.com

From a bear in the backyard to a coyote crossing a city highway to chimpanzees that look more like human children, these were some of the year’s winning images BigPicture Natural World one of the world’s largest wildlife and conservation competitions. In 2023, the competition celebrates 10 years of depicting life on Earth and some of the many threats facing our planet. Since its inception, more than 7,300 pictures have been sent from all over the world.

BigPicture announced its finalists of the year and the top prize went to American photographer Corey Arnaldo’s image ‘Amigo do Quintal’, which also won in the Photoreportage category. The portrait tells the story of a retired couple living on the outskirts of Asheville, North Carolina, who often meet fourlegged visitors, such as the American black bear, on their porch. The work shows that these animals may become smarter and braver by coexisting closely with humans.

Overall, photos were awarded in seven categories: Aquatic life, terrestrial wildlife, winged life, landscapes, aquatic landscapes and flora, nature art, human/nature and photo report. See the winners below!
