Styria has pledged emergency aid to Ukraine for the area hit by heavy flooding following the destruction of the Kachowka dam.

At the state fire school in Lebring, in southern Styria, Provincial Social Councilor Doris Kampus (SPÖ) and European Councilor Werner Amon (ÖVP) delivered five wastewater pumps and a shallow water bot worth a total of €40,000 to the Ukrainian Ambassador Vasyl Khymynets.

Khymynets: People sit on rooftops

“Tens of thousands of people are victims of this terrible crime. They are in the flooded houses, some of them are also sitting on the roofs. The important thing now is that we help these people, that above all we can evacuate these people. Unfortunately, attempts by the Ukrainian authorities to evacuate or help these people are impossible as they are repeatedly thwarted by Russian bombing. That is, here we are talking about the fact that we need to increase pressure on Russia with international organizations so that these people are saved. The average water level in these flooded areas is almost five meters. Almost 4,000 houses are under water,” said the Ukrainian ambassador.

Emergency aid shows solidarity with Ukraine

Khymynets thanked the emergency aid. Most importantly, it happened quickly. “It can save many people and also animals. This is a big piece of the puzzle that fits the picture of how Austria shows solidarity with Ukraine. I’m here in Styria to personally thank the residents. I can assure you that this aid is going where it is supposed to,” Khymynets said. In delivering the emergency aid, Kampus and Amon stressed that it is now important to act and help quickly.
