Lifetime dream of this goalkeeper: “I don’t think I’ve realized yet that I’m going to play in the World Cup”

Lysianne Proulx was called up to the national team many times in her youth but this is her first time at the Senior World Cup.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper, originally from Boucherville, knows very well what to expect during her stay in Oceania.

“I’m there more for the experience and to support my teammates,” confides the man, aware that he’s third in the goalkeeping hierarchy. But of course I want to be on the side of the pressure.

“I want to learn as much as possible and soak it all up for next time. I hope it will be my turn in four years. I want to see how everything works, what to do and what to avoid. I want to collect as much baggage as possible so that the transition to the next tournament is as easy as possible.

She has already gained experience with the senior team by taking part in the CONCACAF women’s championship in 2022.

“I was mentally ready for the challenge. I just got back from wrist surgery and had six months of rehabilitation. It came at the right time in my career, during a period of growth.

A dream

Proulx is therefore very down-to-earth about this tournament, even if it is undeniably special.

“It’s a dream, I’ve thought about it since I was very young. I was lucky to be there as an U17 and U20 player, but it’s really not the same.

At the time of the interview with Le Journal, a week before the start of the tournament, Proulx still hadn’t fully grasped what was happening to him.

“I don’t think it’s really clear to me that I’m going to the World Cup. I’m the third goalkeeper, so I’m not under the same pressure.”

At 24, she has the maturity to find her place in professional life. Eventually she played in college at Syracuse and now plays professionally at SCU Torreense, a Portuguese second division club.

Still, she found a listening ear from her teammates Kailen Sheridan and Sabrina D’Angelo. And she has great respect for them.

“The veterans, of course, took me under their wing, they help me a lot and I can ask a lot of questions. Both are very open to sharing their experiences. There aren’t many people like her.

“For me, Sheridan is the best goalkeeper in the world and she is ready to help the second and third goalkeepers. It’s something that rarely happens with someone you’re competing with for a position.”
