Like Apple and Google, Oppo would be working on its own processor for smartphones

At the end of 2021, Oppo made a small change in strategy and for the first time offered an in-house chip called MariSilicon X, a processor entirely dedicated to the photo part of its high-end smartphones, which is commonly referred to as an ISP (for image signal processor). A year later, the Chinese company continues its momentum with the MariSilicon Y, its first Bluetooth chip, this time for its audio products. The next step is therefore logically the creation of a complete SoC, as offered by Google and Apple. That’s a good thing, because according to Ice Universe, it’s planned for 2024.

As GSMArena notes, there’s a good chance that Oppo will go for an ARM base to take advantage of Cortex CPUs and Mali GPUs, like more classic chip designers like Qualcomm or MediaTek. To cope with this rather difficult task, the Chinese company was able to afford the services of a manufacturer who is already comfortable in the exercise – we think in particular of Huawei and its Kirin chips, which a few years ago managed to beat the dragee to the competition to hold high . But Oppo could just as well benefit from the expertise of a founder, particularly MediaTek, which has launched a customization program for its high-end chips for manufacturers. Still quite a choice for the Chinese company, which might as well turn to TSMC directly to get what it needs. In doing so, it would act like Apple, which ended its partnership with Samsung in 2015 with the release of the Apple A9X chip in the first iPad Pro.

Last October, a rumor reported that Oppo was planning to make a 3nm engraved SoC, its thinnest yet. The first results should arrive in early 2023, but production delays have undermined those plans. Finally, note that the MariSilicon X is currently already being manufactured by TSMC on their production lines in 6nm. So the partnership already exists and could be expanded to include a larger project in the future.
