While the Venice Film Festival typically attracts Hollywood’s biggest names, stars are avoiding the event this year because the SAG-AFTRA strikes have prevented them from promoting their work there.
Hollywood has been at a standstill since July 17, when members of the SAG-AFTRA union joined the Writers Guild Of America on strike over growing concerns about the use of artificial intelligence and streaming residuals.
According to Variety, a select list of films premiering in Venice have received a temporary exemption from SAG-AFTRA because they are independent productions not produced by AMPTP members.

The sides have not met since August 18, when the AMPTP rejected a counteroffer from the WGA, and there has been no move to resume talks since then.
In the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, which is entering its 43rd day of protests, many well-known actors showed their solidarity with striking actors by taking one (or more) of the following actions: issuing statements of support for the strikes; Participated in picketing in LA, New York City; and donating/distributing bottled water and/or food to the picket lines.
Famous names who took part in the picketing in Los Angeles or New York City include Jason Sudeikis, Susan Sarandon, Vanessa Hudgens, Mandy Moore, Logan Lerman, America Ferrera and Josh Gad, to name a few.
While there has been little movement in talks between AMPTP and SAG-AFTRA, talks with the WGA appear to have stalled.
SAG-AFTRA told members in an email Sunday that the negotiating committee was ready to return to the negotiating table “spontaneously,” but so far there has been little progress.
