How did the rivalry between the two Peruvian teams arise?
Alianza Lima was the first to be founded. On February 15, 1901, members of a stable owned by former Peruvian President Augusto B. Leguía founded the team we know today as Blue and White under the name Sport Alianza.
On the other hand, the Universitario de Deportes was founded on August 7, 1924 by a group of students from the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos from the faculties of engineering and agricultural sciences.

It was the first confrontation, recorded on September 23, 1928, known as the “Classic of the Canes”, which would lead to the rivalry between the teams. This year both teams fought for recognition. While Alianza Lima competed for the championship twice for the first time, the “U” was surprising because it reached the final and participated in a championship for the first time.
In that game, Pablo Pacheco scored a goal for Universitario seven minutes into the first half. Against this background, Alianza Lima tried to respond with conflictual meetings. This resulted in the blue and white team ending the game with five players sent off.

After the game in which the university became champions, according to sports journalist Rubén Marrufo, the university students celebrated their victory in front of the door of an anti-Leguía government newspaper.
Historian Jaime Pulgar Vidal, in turn, says that in the next game, which Alianza Lima won, the blue and white fans celebrated in front of another newspaper that openly supported Leguía.

It should be noted that at that time the “U” was an association associated with the Citizens’ Party: According to the book “The Citizens’ Party before the War with Chile” by author Ulrich Mücke, the group consisted of university professors. This organization was a clear opponent of President Leguía.
Now that you know the origin of the rivalry between the two teams, do you think that the enmity is well-founded or that you are simply watching a confrontation caused by political parties?
