Line of Duty is reportedly returning to the series with an explosive climax after fans were “disappointed” with the cop show’s Season 6 finale last year.
According to The Sun, Adrian Dunbar, Vicky McClure and Martin Compton are reprising their roles for a three-part BBC special that could air as early as Christmas 2023.
A source told the publication: “Viewers weren’t happy with the end of series six and were crying out for a more sensational conclusion – now [writer] each [Mercurio] can deliver that’.

“The question is if the person we thought was H is really the villain AC-12 was chasing or if it’s another nemesis.”
Before adding, “The fact that they’re taking the unusual step of doing three episodes instead of the usual six or seven reflects how special this is for the show.”

Gutted: Line Of Duty fans across the country were “angry” as the nail-biting series finale drew to a close in May, when mysterious antagonist “H” was finally revealed to be the bumbling Ian Buckells (pictured).
Veteran fans took to social media in droves to share their frustration when officers from the police anti-corruption unit, AC-12, discovered the identity of the elusive “fourth man” who had been working with organized crime group (OCG) none other than the clumsy cop.
After the show, the words “angry,” “disappointing,” and “underwhelming” were seen on social media.
And disbelief that he might be was compounded by the fact that he was only caught for repeatedly misspelling the word “definitely” — hardly the mistake of a hardened criminal mastermind.

The detective, widely believed to be just a bumbling henchman, was first introduced to viewers in series one by then-Chief Superintendent Derek Hilton as the SIO on the case of murdered businesswoman Jackie Laverty.
He later became Detective Chief Inspector in the fourth series before being promoted again to Detective Superintendent in that final series.
It comes after Vicky McClure admitted the show’s cast would all love to return for another series but hinted Martin Compston’s busy schedule could be a problem.
The 39-year-old actress appeared on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, where she discussed the potential for BBC drama to return.
And Vicky, who played DCI Kate Fleming on the show, said the cast would all “love to do it.”
However, she said her co-star Martin Compston, who played AC12’s Detective Inspector Steve Arnott, has been very busy, which could suggest this could cause a problem.
Speaking to GMB, she said: “I talk to the guys all the time, we’d all love to, we’re all in – Martin’s in nine shows! There’s a lot going on, I’m sure we’ll make it.’
Vicky also admitted she’s on a “busy” WhatsApp chat with her Line Of Duty co-stars, which includes Adrian Dunbar – who played Superintendent Ted Hastings.
