As a guest of Verissimo, Lino Banfi talked about the last, difficult months of his wife Lucia Lagrasta. In addition to Alzheimer’s, the woman also struggled with epilepsy and a brain tumor. The actor, moved by the memory of Lucia’s suffering, explained that he made a request to God: “I beg you, let her die”.

As a guest on the Verissimo episode, which aired March 26, the actor explained how much the woman has been suffering lately. Banfi did everything to stay close to her and give her the attention and love she needed: “It’s hard. People who have lived together all their lives stick together like glue and paper, if you suddenly tear the paper there is no way of putting it back together. It’s all so confusing, weird.”

Lino Banfi drew a parallel with his work as an actor. He explained that he faithfully followed “the script” to help his wife experience the best possible days of her illness: “I stuck to the Alzheimer’s script, I followed it well, I knew the role by heart.” , the professor said to me: “Lino, we’re in a phase now where every movie he sees, every show he sees says he’s already seen it. Get used to that thing.” And when she said she’d seen her before, I replied that I didn’t remember and she replied, “Maybe you weren’t there that day.” The professor then told me, I should tell her that I saw her too, so she is happier: “Otherwise she understands that something is wrong.” And me: “Now I remember, I saw it, I saw it. Let’s check it out if you’d like, and so we went on.

Lino Banfi then explained that suddenly everything changed because Lucia Lagrasta’s health was deteriorating and Alzheimer’s was no longer the only problem to face:

Suddenly the screenplay, the film, the scenography changed. After Alzheimer’s came the epileptic crises, so he took anti-epileptics, which are terrible drugs, but they’re needed to block some things. After a while they said to me: “Lino, we’re sorry to tell you this, but we did the MRI and something else took over, you can see some spots on the brain.” Brain tumor two days later. A completely different script, you don’t understand anything anymore. I’ll tell you something I haven’t told anyone before. Although I am very Catholic, I got angry that day, but within two days – when I understood the real situation – this anger turned into a request: “I beg you, let her die”, we are at this point arrived.
Lino Banfi was touched and recalled how much his wife liked Michele Zarrillo’s song “Five Days” and ended in tears:
How do I adjust to life? It’s tough. […] Lucia died with a smile on her face because she was no longer suffering. He wasn’t conscious. I am 86 and have decided that after 90 I want to do a 2 year extension as well. You have to give me 6. In the meantime, I’m talking to those responsible (God, ed.) to give Lucia a place, she died the same days as Maurizio Costanzo, they must have gone together to ask for verdicts.
