Lisa Marie Presley’s cause of death was small bowel obstruction, according to an autopsy report obtained Thursday from the Los Angeles County Coroner.
Presley, the only child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, died on January 12 at the age of 54.
A small bowel obstruction is a blockage in the small intestine, which the Mayo Clinic says can be caused by colon cancer, certain medications, abdominal adhesions that form after surgery, and conditions that can cause intestinal inflammation, such as Crohn’s disease.
The coroner’s report concluded that Presley’s obstruction was caused by “adhesion that developed years ago during bariatric surgery. This is a known long-term complication of this type of surgery.”

It’s somewhat unusual to die from a small bowel obstruction, as people who suffer from it usually have painful symptoms that would prompt a doctor’s visit, said Dr. Angelique Campen, an emergency room physician at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, Calif. CBS News.
The autopsy revealed that Presley had complained of abdominal pain the morning of her death.
Presley, a singer-songwriter, died like her father after being hospitalized in January after suffering cardiac arrest at her home in Calabasas, California.
Later in January, a memorial service for Presley was held at Graceland, Elvis Presley’s former home, now converted into a museum, and where Elvis Presley is buried. Lisa Marie Presley was buried next to her son Benjamin Keough, who died by suicide in 2020.
