Follow our live coverage of the 2024 Oscar nominations.
The 96th Academy Awards could finally answer the season's defining film question: Is this the year of “Barbie” or “Oppenheimer”? Or since both films received a similar number of Oscar nominations (“Barbie” with eight and “Oppenheimer” with 13), it will just be another excuse for us to use the term “Barbenheimer.”
The nominations for the 2024 Oscars were announced Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Time ahead of the March 10 ceremony.
New York Times awards season columnist Kyle Buchanan previously predicted that given the amount of good films and impressive talent we've been treated to over the past year, it's hard to say which film, if any, will be the winner would be in the big categories of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress – and he was right. “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “The Holdovers” and “Poor Things” all received nominations in the Best Picture category and mostly received nominations in all major categories.
