The winner of the Japanese equivalent of the Goncourt Prize explained that she wrote about 5% of her book using artificial intelligence. A revelation that is controversial and greatly displeases Jean-Baptiste Andrea, winner of the Goncourt in 2023.
It all starts with Japanese author Rie Kudan, who won the local equivalent of the Goncourt Prize and publicly revealed that she used “about 5%” artificial intelligence when writing her novel. The reactions of the Japanese, who do not like polemics, remain muted. “Artificial intelligence is great. On the other hand, I think humans still have hidden resources,” said one woman.

“For me, AI is even desirable. People will naturally accept them in the end,” predicts Kamo Kazuhiro, bookseller. Would the reaction in France be just as mild? For Jean-Baptiste Andrea, winner of the Goncourt 2023, the practice is not permitted. “In this case we are only talking about 5% of a book, but the author is not the author of 5% of that book. Someone else wrote it, and it doesn't matter that it's artificial. “I think that the goods are really being deceived, it is fraud,” he says.
