LIVE Fighting intensifies in eastern and southern Ukraine

The UN Security Council is expected to hold another public meeting Thursday on Russia’s war against Ukraine amid “the continuing deterioration in the humanitarian situation,” diplomats said on Monday. This meeting, requested by France and Mexico, will be the 16th meeting of the Security Council since the February 24 Russian invasion.

Several countries, especially Western ones, want to believe that the Security Council meeting on the war in Ukraine, which takes place at least once a week, will make it possible to keep up the pressure on Russia and its isolation on the international stage. For Thursday, France and Mexico have requested briefings from the UN Department for Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), a diplomat said.

The new Security Council meeting follows the adoption on Friday of a unanimous Security Council statement initiated by Norway and Mexico and the UN Secretary-General “in seeking a ‘peaceful solution’ to the conflict. This first demonstration of unity since the invasion took place with the support of Moscow, which had hitherto blocked the Council’s initiatives.
