Live photos from the coronation of Charles II: ceremony, illustrious guests, crowd

The solemn coronation ceremony of Charles III. (watch live here) began with military parades through the streets of London. When guests enter Westminster, they follow the strict and very detailed ceremonial that Buckingham Palace requires: the daily program is set hour by hour. For hours, sometimes days, a patient throng of subjects loyal to the monarchy crowded the streets of the capital along the route of the royal carriage that transported king and queen, Charles and Camilla, from the palace to the abbey. Still in the carriage, Carlo and Camilla will return to the palace at the end of the ceremony, which Elisabetta’s son wanted shorter and slimmer than his 70-year-old mother’s, but no less solemn. And the solemnity is breathed directly from the perfection of the first parades. We follow picture by picture the most important moments of this day (Ap.) Buckingham Palace balcony finishing touches: King Charles, Queen consort Camilla and the rest of the royal family will look out from here. At least its expected members: Prince Harry and Andrea will actually not be there as they have no official duties during the ceremony.

Not just royalist believers: Republicans are also demonstrating against the king and the monarchy among the crowd in London. Graham Smith, director of Republic, an organization fighting to abolish the monarchy, was arrested along with six volunteers. The king receives the holy anointing behind a curtain: it is the intimate and holy moment of the coronation that must remain “hidden” because it is liturgical and mystical.
