Ismaïla Sarr came so close to scoring fully on the cross that would have given Senegal a 1-0 lead.

FOREPLAY

Prepare the stage

England start the knockout stages with the intention of completing another long run like in 2018 when they reached the semi-finals before losing that game and the third-place play-off. The Three Lions got off to a good start in group play, notching up dominant victories over Iran and Wales to a draw, while the USA sat between them.

Senegal are looking to continue their surprise run after emerging from Group A without Sadio Mané, one of the best players in the world. Mané will still be absent for the rest of the tournament but Senegal have already won twice without him and put in a strong performance in their defeat by the Netherlands.

This is the first time the two nations have faced each other.

Raham Sterling out

England announced about an hour before the game that the midfielder would not play on Sunday to attend to a family matter.
