Over 28,000 runners took to the pavement Monday for the 126th Boston Marathon. The historic race is back on Patriots Day this year after the COVID-19 pandemic pushed last year’s marathon to October.

The wheelchair divisions started shortly after 9 a.m., followed by the elite fields around half an hour later. A total of eleven former champions competed.

Peres Jepchirchir, 28, of Kenya, won the women’s division in an incredible finish not seen in years. She finished the race with an unofficial time of 2:21:01, narrowly beating Ababel Yeshaneh, 30, of Ethiopia.

Evans Chebet, 33, of Kenya, won the men’s professional division with an unofficial time of 2:06:51. It is the first time he has finished the Boston Marathon and this is his first major title.

Manuela Schar, 37, of Switzerland, who previously won the 2017, 2019 and 2021 Boston Marathon, won the women’s wheelchair class with an unofficial time of 1:41:08.

23-year-old American Daniel Romanchuk won the men’s wheelchair division with an unofficial time of 1:26:58. He previously won the Boston Marathon in 2019.
