Live, war in Ukraine: deadly bombings in Kherson; Kiev opens investigation into “execution video”

Ukraine accuses Russia of executing two soldiers who surrendered

Ukraine accused Russia on Saturday of committing a “war crime” by executing two Ukrainian soldiers who had signaled their intention to surrender.

The Ukrainian human rights commissioner Dmytro Lubinets, however, denounced a “war crime”. “Today a video of the execution of surrendered Ukrainian soldiers by Russian soldiers was published on the Internet,” he wrote on Telegram. Dmytro Lubinets ruled that the two Ukrainian soldiers “did what was necessary by showing that they had surrendered” and that Russia had “captured” them, and called for appropriate “punishment.” The two men “posed no threat,” he added.

In his message, the Ukrainian Human Rights Commissioner says that this is not the first time such a case has occurred: “You are not alone. » He is specifically referring to another video broadcast in March that appears to show a captured Ukrainian soldier being executed by bullets after shouting “Glory to Ukraine!” » and that had gone viral. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights recalled at the time that it had “documented numerous violations of international humanitarian law against prisoners of war, including cases of summary executions of prisoners in the Russian and Ukrainian wars.”
