Live, war in Ukraine: G7 vows to remain “united” in its “firm support” for Kiev

  • G7 foreign ministers assured on Wednesday, November 8, meeting in Tokyo that the group would remain “united” in its “firm support” for Ukraine against the Russian invasion. They also assured that they would continue to jointly impose “severe sanctions” against Moscow. “Ukraine is and will remain at the top of the G7 agenda,” promised German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock on Tuesday.
  • NATO countries have announced their intention to suspend their participation in the Treaty on Conventional Forces in Europe (FCE) limits conventional arsenals on the continent for as long as necessary. This follows Russia’s decision to withdraw from the pact, announced by President Vladimir Putin last May and officially taking effect on Tuesday.
  • “Ukraine will be part of the European Union”argued Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday, in his daily speech. He reiterated that his country is “preparing.”[ait] is already taking the next steps” in this sense, in particular by “strengthening” its institutions.
  • Russia reported six deaths on Tuesday in a strike in Donetsk attributed to Ukraine. According to Denis Pushilin, head of the Donetsk People’s Republic, civilian buildings were damaged in this attack, including a social center, a medical facility and residential buildings. He added that the launch was carried out by the M142 Himars multiple rocket launcher system.
  • France will increase the French support fund in Kiev by 200 million euros to allow the Ukrainian army to continue purchasing French equipment, Armed Forces Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced on Tuesday.
  • New Nasams surface-to-air missile batteries (Norwegian advanced surface-to-air missile system) have entered service in UkrainePresident Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Tuesday, welcoming a “timely strengthening” of air defense before winter.
  • The Netherlands sent its first five F-16 fighter jets to Romania on Tuesdayin which Ukrainian and Romanian soldiers must undergo pilot training, the Dutch Ministry of Defense said in a press release.
  • Electricity and gas facilities were mined by Russian forces in the occupied part of Kherson Oblast, Ukrainian intelligence services said on Tuesday.
  • Volodymyr Zelensky closed the door to possible 2024 presidential elections in the country on Monday while almost 20% of its territory is occupied by Russia and millions of Ukrainians are refugees abroad. “The time has come for defense, for the struggle on which the fate of the state and the people depends, and not for the farce that only Russia expects from Ukraine,” he decided in his daily speech.
