At their meeting on Tuesday in Brussels, the defense ministers of the 27 states reaffirmed their common will to support Kiev in the fight against the Russian army. However, the question arises about the resources provided and the pace of European assistance, at a time when Ukraine recognizes the failure of its counteroffensive launched in June.
“We are doing a lot, but everyone agrees that we need to do more and faster,” said European diplomacy chief Josep Borrell. On the German side it was admitted that the goal of delivering one million ammunition to Kiev by spring would not be achieved. “Look at Russia. It produces more than ever before. They are receiving ammunition from North Korea,” warned Estonian minister Hanno Pevkur. “Europe cannot say that Russia and North Korea can honor their commitments, and we cannot,” he added.
Within the EU today we are asking ourselves what resources will be made available to help Ukraine. Josep Borrell also said he would present a revised plan of European targets for support to Ukrainians later this month. This also includes the expectation of a summit of the 27, which is planned for mid-December.
