MARINA OVSIANNIKOVA ON LCI
Russian journalist Marina Ovsiannikova was sentenced in absentia in Russia to eight and a half years in prison on Wednesday. She lived in exile in France and was a guest at LCI that Thursday morning.
She revealed she was “not surprised” by yesterday’s verdict. “We are already used to the fact that the judiciary in Russia is a puppet justice system. In 20 years of his reign, Putin has destroyed all independent media and the independent judiciary.” And the journalist denounces a “politically motivated decision”.
“I will appeal [du verdict]. I was unable to attend this trial because there was a court-appointed attorney who did not contact me. END OF SLOVAK AID
After the election victory of former Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was considered pro-Russian, Slovakia refused to provide additional military aid to Ukraine. The latter is now responsible for forming a new government.
According to the Slovak press, President Zuzana Čaputová refused to sign an aid program for Ukraine drawn up by the Defense Ministry when the current prime minister was still in office. The leader refused as he believed that the parliamentary elections should be respected. After Poland’s withdrawal from aid to Kiev, this is a further erosion of European solidarity.

Strikes in Russia
According to Governor Roman Starovoit, a drone attack hit infrastructure in Russia’s Kursk Oblast yesterday evening. Facilities in Sudzha, Korenevsky and Glushkovsky districts were reportedly attacked, resulting in power outages. No casualties were reported. In recent weeks there have been increasing reports of drone attacks in Kursk Oblast and on this border with Ukraine. According to the Kyiv Independent, the Ukrainian government rarely comments on these claims.

THE DAMAGE OF WAR
According to the Kyiv School of Economics, the recorded direct damage increased by $700 million compared to June 2023. “As of September 1, 2023, the total documented direct damage caused by Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine’s infrastructure was $151.2 billion.”

BLACK SEA
London accuses Russia of trying to attack civilian ships in the Black Sea and using sea mines to prevent the export of Ukrainian grain. “Intelligence (…) suggests that Russia is attempting to attack civilian ships using the ‘humanitarian corridor’ in Ukraine to disrupt the export of Ukrainian grain,” the British Foreign Office wrote in a statement.
Moscow “will certainly want to avoid openly sinking civilian ships and will falsely blame Ukraine for any attacks.” According to the United Kingdom, Russia has destroyed 130 port infrastructures in the country since withdrawing from the deal on Ukrainian grain exports across the Black Sea in July Ukraine destroyed and 300,000 tons of grain destroyed.
