A man performing maintenance was crushed by a telescopic urinal in Cambridge Circus in London’s West End theater district on Friday afternoon, police confirmed.
“We are sorry to report that despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the man who was seriously injured in Cambridge Circus was pronounced dead at the scene,” the Metropolitan Police said on Twitter.
The man’s family had been notified, police said.

Telescopic urinals placed in the area 20 years ago remain underground during the day and are hydraulically raised overnight to reduce urination on the street, according to BBC News.

“Our thoughts and deepest sympathy go out to the friends and family of the worker who tragically died at this West End site today,” a member of Westminster City Council said in a statement, according to the BBC. “We have been on the ground and supported our contractor and the emergency services and will assist any investigation in any way we can.”

The incident happened near the Palace Theater, where Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is set.
