“We have spent $375,248 in legal fees of all kinds to enforce the city’s right to intervene in wildlife control in an urban environment,” said Louis-Pascal Cyr, spokesman for the city of Longueuil.
In an interview on LCN, the spokesman argued that the city would certainly have preferred not to have to pay this significant sum.
“We were sued and it was our duty to defend our ability to intervene to preserve the ecological balance of our park,” he added.
The deer population “far exceeds the capacity” of Michel Chartrand Park, which is “invaluable to the people of Longueillois,” Mr. Cyr said.
Remember, Sauvetage Animal Rescue’s appeal in this Longueuil deer saga was denied last October.
Rally “against the slaughter of deer in Longueuil”.
A rally is planned this evening at around 8 p.m. in front of the Longueuil town hall to demonstrate “against the slaughter of deer in Longueuil.”
Some actors and public figures will speak out to denounce the city’s decision.
In the press release announcing the demonstration, the spokesman mentions “the inflation of the numbers regarding the number of deer that are part of the population of the Michel Chartrand Park”.
Protesters will also express their opposition to paying legal fees.
