The President of the United States, Joe Biden, will meet with his Mexican counterpart Andrés Manuel López Obrador on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Forum for Economic Cooperation, the White House confirmed this Monday.

Biden and López Obrador will hold their meeting on Friday in San Francisco, California, where the APEC summit is taking place this week.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that both leaders will “discuss ongoing efforts to strengthen the bilateral relationship between the United States and Mexico and address issues of mutual interest.”

“They will also discuss,” the spokesperson emphasized, “how we can continue to work together as partners to manage migration at our shared border and mobilize a hemispheric response to this challenge.”

The Mexican president declined to attend the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles last June after the United States government adopted an exclusionary stance toward Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

APEC 2023 will welcome more than a thousand participants and feature more than 30 speakers, including world leaders, global business leaders and thought leaders, to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing the world.

Established in 1989, APEC is a multilateral forum that seeks to consolidate the growth and prosperity of countries around the Pacific Ocean and addresses issues related to trade exchanges, economic coordination and cooperation among its 21 members.
