Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador apologized to Congresswoman Salma Luevano, the country's first trans person to become a federal representative, for saying she was “a man dressed like a woman.” .

Over the weekend, Lopez Obrador met Luevano at an event and greeted her with a kiss on the cheek. The two come from the same party, Morena.

The next day he was asked why he greeted her like that. At that time, he explained that the deputy was a man dressed as a woman.

The sentence was heavily criticized on social media. Several members of Mexico's LGBTQIA+ community expressed their solidarity with the deputy.

This Tuesday (9) he finally apologized. At a press conference he said: “I would like to apologize to the colleague who identifies as a woman.”

The congresswoman published a text on the social network X (Twitter) in which she announced that she had received the apology: “Today President Lopez Obrador issued an apology for misrepresenting me. This statement is very important because it makes our decadeslong struggle visible. “I’m a woman and that’s not up for discussion,” she said.
