Lopez Obrador urged Mexico to move towards a welfare state

In a ceremony in the main courtyard of the National Palace with his entire cabinet, representatives of the institutions and guests of honor, the President, as always, told what had happened during this period in the first of three messages that he usually issues each year.

Estimating that the most important of the first three months of 2022 are the decline in the Covid-19 pandemic and good results in the fight against violence, he reiterated that there will be no budget limit for providing free medical care and medicines on health issues .to all Mexicans.

Regarding the procedure for revoking the mandate, held on April 10, López Obrador thanked the population for their support. He said in the constitutional process to revoke the mandate, a majority of the people voted in favor of him remaining in government and his term ending at the end of September 2024.

López Obrador listed some of the crimes that have declined in this first quarter of the year, such as: Burglary 29, shop 23, passers-by 23 and local public transport 33.

He acknowledged that three out of 12 crimes show a significant increase: femicide, extortion and theft of public transport.

On welfare, he said his government is delivering on promises and currently 10 million 163,000 older adults are receiving a pension, an increase of 42 percent, and all social programs have been expanded and will receive 25 million direct benefits to Mexican families.

As expected, he referred to his electricity reform proposal, which will be debated in the Senate next Sunday, and assured us that we had already secured ourselves in the event of a betrayal by the opposition parties.

In this context, he pointed out that these are times of definition and that the legislature must decide without half-measures whether to position itself as a defender of the interests of domestic and foreign companies or whether to actually position itself as an authentic representative of the people and nation. Very soon we will know who is who in such an important place, he said.

He recalled that the Supreme Court has declared the Electricity Industry Act constitutional, but if it does not get two-thirds of the vote due to lawmakers boycotting it, it will send an initiative to Congress to amend the Mining Act to state that lithium only can be exploited by the Mexican state.

He highlighted the figures for economic growth in Mexico, including the 71 percent increase in the minimum wage in real terms, and asserted that the country had grown 5.0 percent this year, almost as much as the United States.
