L’Oréal launches the “ultra-precise smart makeup applicator” for people with limited mobility

L’Oréal has developed a new high-tech motorized makeup applicator for users with limited hand and arm mobility – with the motto “The future of beauty is inclusive”.

According to the brand, the HAPTA device is the “first wearable, ultra-precise computer-controlled makeup applicator designed to advance the beauty needs of people with limited mobility.”

The company points out that an estimated 50 million people worldwide live with limited fine motor skills, which can make applying makeup difficult.

To address this issue and enable people to apply lipstick evenly at home, L’Oréal has developed a device that uses technology previously used in utensils designed to help people with mobility issues eat independently and confidently.

It says HAPTA boasts a “combination of built-in intelligent motion controls and customizable attachments” that help the user with a range of activities.

These include “increased ease of use for hard-to-open packaging and precise application that is otherwise difficult to achieve.”

This will help people with limited arm and hand mobility feel more confident and independent and “feel empowered to enjoy the self-expression of beauty”.

According to Nicolas Hieronimus, CEO of L’Oréal Groupe: “For L’Oréal, the future of beauty is inclusive. And that future is being made more accessible by technology.

“The two consumer technologies we’re introducing at CES this year represent our company’s true purpose: to create the beauty that moves the world.”

HAPTA has a magnetic attachment that, according to L’Oréal, allows for easy ergonomic use.

Users can set the intended position with a “click” feature so it stays in position during use and can be locked as a custom setting for future use.

The product is rechargeable, with a full charge taking around three hours and allowing for around an hour of continuous use – or an estimated 10 uses.

HAPTA is being tested with Lancôme (owned by L’Oréal) this year, with other makeup application tools to follow in the future.

Françoise Lehmann, Lancôme Global Brand President, said: “For years, Lancôme has strived to offer every woman beauty solutions tailored to their needs.

“Beauty technology has enabled us to fulfill this mission even more effectively by revolutionizing the way we create beauty products and services and enabling greater personalization.

“With HAPTA, we’re taking it a step further by making beauty more accessible to use, because everyone should have the same access to it.”

HAPTA was unveiled by L’Oréal last week at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023 in Las Vegas, along with another innovation – the Brow Magic device.

The product uses augmented reality (AR) to draw your perfect eyebrows – making microblading, threading and waxing a thing of the past.

Developed in partnership with Prinker, a company specializing in printed temporary tattoos, the technology scans the user’s face and makes recommendations for the best eyebrow shape.

AR overlays computer-generated images onto an existing reality. In this case, computer-generated images of the perfect brow for that user are overlaid on the image of their existing brow.

Users sweep a primer through their eyebrows, then use a handheld device to sweep over each eyebrow in a single motion before applying a final top coat.

The brow applicator uses 2,400 tiny nozzles and printing technology to apply up to 1,200 drops of print resolution per inch.

However, the new make-up machine does not work like a semi-permanent tattoo. The painted eyebrows can be removed immediately with makeup remover if you find they are not the right shape or too thick.

The portable, lightweight device is the first electronic eyebrow makeup device to be developed, according to L’Oréal.
