Love Island star Malin Andersson bravely opens up about harrowing battle with drink and drugs after checking into a £12,000 rehab clinic

Malin Andersson has spoken out after checking into a £12,000 rehab clinic to combat alcohol and drug abuse.

The former Love Island star, 31, who shot to fame on the show's second series in 2016, signed up for a three-week program after losing control through self-medication following a series of personal tragedies.

Television personality Malin lost her baby daughter Consy in January 2019 when she died a month after her birth, just weeks after Malin's mother Consy-Gloria died after a battle with cancer.

Reality star Malin gave birth to another daughter in January 2022, but split from the baby's father, Jared, shortly after her arrival.

Malin has also lost her father to cancer, battled eating disorders, lost friends to suicide and survived domestic violence.

According to Malin, after splitting from her ex Jared in 2022, her alcohol and drug use spiraled out of control and he suggested she seek help.

Although Malin initially didn't think she had a problem, she entered a recovery program.

She told The Sun: “I don't drink every day. “I don't wake up wanting to drink. Sometimes I can go two months without it. But I used alcohol and drugs as a coping strategy.”

As for how much she drank, she explained: “I would drink a lot.” It could be three bottles of wine or champagne or whatever, then shots…

“Drugs weren’t always involved, but they were when I was in the wrong group.”

“Then I would go back to normal and that would last for a few weeks – then the cycle would repeat again.”

Malin said she felt “ashamed and guilty” for the position she was in, adding that going to rehab sounded “crazy.”

She said alcohol became a crutch and she decided to check into a facility for three weeks of intensive therapy.

Malin said she found it extremely difficult to be away from her daughter Xaya for three weeks, but insisted it was the right thing to do.

The TV star opened up about how she was struggling with her health in December last year.

She told her social media followers that she was feeling lonely as she was having difficulty falling asleep due to a health condition.

While posing with no makeup and messy hair, the star shared the reality of motherhood as she sat exhausted on her bed after struggling to bed with her child.

Malin has spent the last year focusing on her health and “inner healing” after welcoming her daughter Xaya.

In the very candid post, she looked away from the camera and smiled sarcastically in her red, white and green reindeer pajamas as she revealed she was suffering from a hernia.

She captioned the post: “Wow look at that face.”

“Tired mother with a painful hernia.”

“I post on Instagram at 3:40 a.m. so see if there are any moms there.” It can feel sooooooooo lonely, especially in the middle of the night. Add in a sleep-deprived Christmas and Hermione's hernia and it's a no-brainer.

“So it took Xaya two hours to fall asleep. And now she's been awake since three in the morning screaming to fall asleep in my bed. Now she's lying in my bed because I'm so tired and have to work tomorrow. She doesn't sleep and finds it so funny.

“Is this a sleep regression or what the hell does it feel like I've gone back in time, she's turning 2 next month.”

“Anyway, this is for my mom.” I see you. The nice thing about it for me is the gratitude of having Xaya in my life – especially at a time when grief is hitting me hard!

“I love you all x.”

Her followers flooded her comments with support and stories of their own, while parents from across the country sympathized with the loving mother.

One fan commented: “I feel you. Mine turns 2 next month and for the last 2 weeks he has been so bad at napping at night. We did sleep training before so he was really good at winding down, but this regression was by far the worst.

“After 2 weeks and apparently this can take up to 6 weeks… He went to bed at 7pm that night after falling asleep while drinking milk (didn't nap during the day), then was at 10pm for an hour and then Awake for half an hour at 2am. It's so hard.

“We're both working on FT and have tried to sleep together but we can't manage it. “I feel you but remember this will pass xxxx'

Another wrote: “I never have to justify putting my little one to bed.” Whether you're working the next day or not, always do what you have to do to get through. Being a mom is hard. Being a single mother is hard. We tend to fall into justification mode because society judges. It's hard not to. But the only thing that matters is you and your little one.

“And don’t worry too much about whether it’s a step backwards or whatever. They are human and go through phases. Each phase will pass and you both will be fine. Again, just do what you need to get through.'

The update came after the TV personality remained silent for weeks after revealing she was undergoing a mammogram on her right breast.

Malin has since embarked on a healthy lifestyle and spoken out about the brutal trolls she received on Instagram following her recent weight loss, despite being clear that she should be eating healthy and feeling better than ever.

She recalled that since adopting a healthy lifestyle, she has “never experienced anything like this.”
