LPHF: Patrice Bergeron names Boston captain

The Professional Women's Hockey League (LPHF) Boston team is preparing for its highly anticipated debut, and who better than Patrice Bergeron to announce the identity of the team's leaders?

Even in retirement, the Quebec native is still an important figure in the Boston community and leaders of the city's women's club called him. The former Boston Bruins gave a beautiful speech on Tuesday about the role of captain and the historic nature of this first season of the LPHF.

“First, I would like to say that this is an exciting moment that you have long deserved. Good luck this season, I have your back. “You are making history, you are pioneers, you are inspiring a lot of young girls who would like to be in your shoes,” said Bergeron, who considered her time in Boston a privilege.

“You don’t always need a letter to be a leader,” he added. In order to be a great and successful team, it is necessary that everyone gives their best every day. However, as a former Boston captain, you represent your teammates, a community and a group of fans here, but most importantly, you are a role model for the younger generation.

Not surprisingly, Hilary Knight was named Boston's first female captain. Bergeron recalled that the 34-year-old Californian is, above all, a great ambassador for women's hockey.

Ontario's Jamie Lee Rattray and Michigan's Megan Keller were named his deputies.

The Boston team will make its debut against Minnesota on Wednesday at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Massachusetts.
