In a statement transmitted by the official Belarusian news agency on Tuesday, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, an ally of Vladimir Putin, said during a meeting that Kyiv presented him with a proposal for a non-aggression pact.
The possibility of Belarus, Russia’s only ally in Europe, being involved in the invasion of Ukraine worries the latter and the international community. To the point that Kyiv would have offered him a non-aggression pact. At least that’s what President Alexander Lukashenko claimed on Tuesday in a statement quoted by the Belarusian news agency Belta and transmitted on Telegram.
“I don’t know why they do this”
“They offer us a non-aggression pact,” the leader said, and continued: “They ask us not to fight Ukraine in any way, so that our troops do not go there.”
A purported move that Alexander Lukashenko saw as at odds with the invaded nation’s aspirations to increase its armament – particularly in German Leopard 2 tanks – thanks to the support of its partners. “I don’t know why the Ukrainians are doing this,” Alexander Lukashenko wondered.
According to Belta, the dictator mentioned this Ukrainian opening during a meeting
Government officials and representatives of the security services.
