Quito, 2 January (EFE).- The Brazilian President, the leftist Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, received today in Brasilia his Ecuadorian counterpart, the conservative Guillermo Lasso, with whom he discussed issues that coincide with their governments, such as chronic ones Malnutrition, security and environmental protection, reported the General Secretariat for Communications of the Presidency of Ecuador.
The Ecuadorian President, who attended the Brazilian’s inauguration ceremony yesterday, Sunday, assured that “there are important points of agreement between the two countries on issues of great concern to citizens”.
He referred to the program implemented by his government to combat chronic malnutrition in children and the Brazilian initiative “Bolsa Familia”, which are intended to create “spaces for coordination and the exchange of experiences to strengthen them”.
He also specified that they had stressed the importance of working together on environmental protection, an area in which the two Presidents are heavily involved.
“We stand ready to work with the countries of the Organization of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty (OTCA: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela) to protect an area of great benefit to humanity,” he added added in the text published by his office.
Likewise, both leaders discussed Ecuador’s participation as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, a position it will hold for a year starting tomorrow.
In that regard, Lula and Lasso mainly talked about the fight against organized crime, the source added.
“We agreed to continue discussing and talking about issues in the area,” Lasso added, evaluating his meeting with Lula.
Brazil’s new President dedicated the first day of his third term to diplomacy, holding two bilateral meetings with many of the leaders who traveled to Brasilia to attend his inauguration.
In addition to Lasso, Lula has, among other things, the Spanish King Felipe VI. receive; and to the Presidents of Argentina, Alberto Fernández; from Bolivia, Luis Arce; and from Colombia, Gustavo Petro. EFE
