President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) spoke this Monday (23) with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to Palácio do Planalto, the two discussed the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

According to Planalto, Lula reported to Putin about the situation of Brazilians waiting to leave the Gaza Strip. The Brazilian leader stressed the need to create a humanitarian corridor through Egypt, allowing foreigners to leave and enter the territory with medicine, water and food.

According to a statement from Planalto, Lula and Putin also agreed on the need to end the bombings in Gaza and release the hostages “immediately.”

Russia did not veto the resolution, which, among other things, provided for the creation of a humanitarian corridor between Gaza and Egypt. Brazil has rotating command of the Council.

Putin “regretted that after so many decades no solution had been found for the creation of the Palestinian state,” the text said.

The presidents also discussed the war between Russia and Ukraine, which began in February 2022 after Russian troops entered Ukrainian territory.

Lula reiterated his willingness to broker a peace agreement between the two countries.

Russia is part of the Brics states, a bloc that includes China, India and South Africa as well as Brazil. Lula has been in contact with Putin since the leaders were previously presidents of their countries.

The PT member reiterated that both Russia and Ukraine are still not ready to negotiate a peace agreement.

After differences of opinion and war of words, Lula met personally with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the USA in September. The leaders talked about trying to end the conflict.
