BRASILIA, December 22 — The President-elect of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, this Thursday officially announced the new members of his cabinet of 37 ministries, who will take office on December 1st. January, Telesur reported.
The leader of the Workers’ Party (PT) announced that Nísia Trindade Lima would take over as Health Minister. The professor at the University Research Institute of Rio de Janeiro is also president of the Fiocruz Foundation, a scientific reference in Brazil that played a key role in the COVID-19 pandemic, the impact of which was minimized by Jair Bolsonaro’s outgoing government.
The Ministry of Education, in turn, is headed by the former governor of Ceará, Camilo Santana. The Senator graduated in Agronomy from the Federal University of Ceará with a Masters in Development and Environment.
At the same time, Esther Dweck, economist, professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and PhD in Economics of Industry and Technology, will lead the new Ministry of Management.
For his part, Marcio Franca, former governor of Sao Paulo, mayor of Sao Vicente, federal deputy and president of the João Mangabeira Foundation, will head the Ministry of Ports and Airports from 2023.
Likewise, the Ministry of Science and Technology is headed by the Deputy Governor of Pernambuco, President of the Brazilian Communist Party and former federal representative, Luciana Santos.
Likewise, Cida Gonçalvez, National Secretary for Combating Violence Against Women and Founder of the Headquarters of Popular Movements in Brazil, will take over the Ministry of Women.
Similarly, four-time governor of Piauí, two-time senator, former federal and state official, writer and banker Wellington Dias has been appointed head of the Department of Social Development. This ministerial department will be responsible for caring for the poor, which is one of the main priorities of Lula’s government for this third term.
In addition, former Minister of Labor and Social Security, Mayor of São Bernardo do Campo and former ABC Metal Union President Luiz Marinho will be in charge of the Labor portfolio.
The Brazilian president-elect has appointed six women to his cabinet so far. Among the most recent appointments, Anielle Franco will lead the Department of Racial Equality. Director of the Marielle Franco Institute, graduate in English and Literature from the State University of Rio de Janeiro and in Journalism from the State University of North Carolina, and City Councilor of Rio de Janeiro, Anielle is the sister of the sociologist and feminist Marielle Franco, who she murdered in 2018.
Silvio Almeida, graduate of the University of Sao Paulo Law School, professor at the Getulio Vargas Foundation, visiting professor at Columbia University and President of the Luiz Gama Institute, will take over the Ministry of Human Rights.
Finally, Vice President-Elect of Brazil, four-term Governor of Sao Paulo, former Federal MP and Mayor of Pindamonhangaba, and Transition Team Coordinator Geraldo Alckim will lead the Ministry of Development, Industry and Trade.
