Far-left ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is leading the race for Brazil’s presidency ahead of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro halved in a month, a new poll showed on Wednesday.
PoderData’s opinion poll found that Lula attracted 40 percent of voting intentions, compared to 35 percent for Bolsonaro if the October elections were held on Wednesday. In mid-March, when Bolsonaro’s former attorney general was still in the running, Lula also had 40 percent support, but the current president only 30 percent.
In a mock runoff, Lula would beat Bolsonaro by just nine percentage points, 47 percent to 38 percent, PoderData found. versus a 14-point lead a month ago and a 22-point gap at the start of 2022.
Other polls by major pollsters have also shown that Lula’s advantage is gradually eroding, although they show him with a more comfortable lead. Datafolha advanced Lula by 17 percentage points in the first round in mid-March, up from 26 in December.
The consultancy said Bolsonaro has gained three points since former judge Sergio Moro. who resigned as justice minister in 2020 said he would withdraw from the race, prompting the pollster to exclude his name from the poll.
According to PoderData, the polling institute of news website Poder360, Lula has a clear advantage over Bolsonaro in poorer northeastern Brazil. but that the President has the edge in the agricultural belt of the Midwest and North of the country.
The gap between Lula and Bolsonaro’s voting intentions is within the margin of error in Brazil’s wealthier south and south-east. PoderData surveyed 3,000 voters nationwide by phone between April 10 and 12. The survey has a margin of error of 2 percentage points up or down.
