BRASILIA, April 20.- Former President of Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced Tuesday that on May 7 he will launch his candidacy for the country’s presidency within the Workers’ Party (PT).
Da Silva explained on his official Twitter account that he expects next October’s election to be a polarizing one, but people should not fear as this trend has always existed.
I’m used to voting in elections. I am neither pleased nor saddened by the investigation. I think we have a good record of governments. I will start my candidacy on May 7th and then I want to visit Brazil, the former president wrote in a tweet.
In an interview for a radio station in the municipality of Palmas, in the central state of Tocantins, Lula said that after the start of his candidacy on May 7, he plans to travel around the country to speak to the population and learn more about their problems.
I don’t want to stay live on digital platforms, I want to travel around Brazil, I want to hug, I want to kiss, I want to greet the people of every Brazilian state, he said. According to various polls, before the presidential elections next October, Lula da Silva has around 43 percent of the voting intention.
In other aspects, Lula has expressed a commitment to listening, engaging with local people and reversing the policies of expropriation presented by current President Jair Bolsonaro, Telesur says.
The country needs peace, someone to have a mature discussion about development, jobs, the future. Not by a president who doesn’t speak to anyone, he said. It has also declared its intention to support the country’s scientific, technological, agricultural and educational development.
Lula da Silva served as President from 2003 to 2010. Beca Familia, a financial transfer program that helped needy groups, and Hambre Cero, which helped those in need to access basic necessities, were some of his programs to eliminate poverty • inequality in the South American country.
