Lula Discusses Venezuela With Macron And Latin American Leaders

A transparent election process in 2024 and the end of sanctions against Maduro were discussed with the country’s vice president and the opposition leader at the meeting

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) met with Latin American leaders, French President Emmanuel Macron and a representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy this Monday afternoon (July 17, 2023) in Brussels, Belgium, where the CELAC Summit (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) with the EU.

As found Power360The aim of the meeting was to discuss Venezuela, which will host presidential elections in 2024. The meeting was attended by the country’s Vice President Delcy Rodrígues and opposition leader Gerardo Blyde.

The heads of state called for a fair and transparent electoral process in the country in accordance with applicable laws and international treaties. They also stressed the possibility of international surveillance, stating that sanctions against Nicolás Maduro’s government could end if Venezuelans accept such terms.

The European Union had already asked to monitor the electoral process, but Venezuela banned any Union observation mission. Other Latin American countries are making efforts to bring Nicolás Maduro back onto the international stage and into dialogue with the opposition.
