Paris, June 22 (EFE). – The President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, vowed today that he will “be very tough on anyone who cuts down a tree in the Amazon,” and gave himself until 2030 to completely end deforestation in the Amazon, which is considered plant-based lungs of the planet.

The Brazilian President stressed that the Amazon “is a sovereign territory of Brazil, but at the same time belongs to all of humanity”. “Therefore,” he added, “we will do whatever is necessary to keep the forest alive.”
Listing all the benefits of the Amazon, the Brazilian President recalled that Brazil is made up of 87% renewable sources, compared to the world average of 27%.
“I want you all to come to Brazil in 2025 when we celebrate COP 30 in the state of Amazonas, and I also want you to talk about the Amazon as the lungs of the world,” he said.
Lula, who is attending the summit in Paris on a new global financial pact to combine development aid and environmental protection, criticized Western countries.
“It wasn’t Africa or Latin America that polluted the planet in the last 200 years, it was they that made the industrial revolution and therefore they have to pay this historic debt to planet earth.” EFE
