Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva called on industrialized countries to invest more in climate protection measures. “The principle of shared but differentiated responsibility remains valid. Therefore, climate financing must be guaranteed for all developing countries according to their needs and priorities,” he said yesterday at a Group of 77 summit in Cuba.
“We must insist on implementing commitments that rich countries have never fulfilled.” Industrialized countries have committed to providing 100 billion US dollars (about 93 billion euros) per year for climate protection in developing countries. However, the payment deadline has so far not been met.
“It’s not the same historical guilt”
Lula said that developing and emerging countries are also ready to act against climate change. “We will do this without forgetting that we do not bear the same historical blame for global warming as rich countries,” he said.
The G-77 is a group of 134 developing countries founded in 1964. China is included without being an official member. Cuba currently holds the annual rotating presidency. At the two-day summit in the capital Havana, representatives from more than 100 countries and UN organizations discussed cooperation in the areas of science, technology and innovation.
