Lula meets up with Petro in Colombia to talk about the Amazon

Leticia borders Tabatinga, in the extreme west of the Amazon, in the border triangle between Colombia, Brazil and Peru.

According to state-run Agencia Brasil, the two pose for an official photo after meeting Petro at the National University of Colombia and later attend the closing session of the meeting at the same venue.

Then Lula’s presidential entourage travels back to the federal capital and, according to the official schedule, is scheduled to arrive at 8:30 p.m. local time.

Sources from the Planalto Palace (seat of executive power) indicated that the meeting between Lula and Petro is a bilateral meeting a month before the Amazon summit scheduled for August 8 in Belén, the capital of the northern State For, is planned.

On this occasion, the city will receive the presidents of Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela.

All of these countries are part of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (OTCA), an international mechanism that should be strengthened from now on.

In addition to the subcontinent’s heads of state, French President Emmanuel Macron was also invited, representing French Guiana, an overseas territory of the European country in South America that also includes parts of the Amazon rainforest.

Taking into account the July 1978 treaty, the ACTO countries jointly committed to preserving the environment and rationally using the natural resources of the Amazon.

In addition to prioritizing the preservation of the environment, the Cooperation Pact aims to promote the development of the Amazon, so that joint actions lead to equitable and mutually beneficial results, in order to achieve sustainable development of the eight nations.

The issue of the Amazon will be at the center of geopolitical attention for years to come, culminating in the holding of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in 2025 in the capital Pará.

For the first time, the most important UN event on environmental issues will take place in the rainforest biome.

Last week, Lula announced that he intends to present a common position on environmental issues from the countries of the South American Amazon at this year’s COP28 climate conference in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
