Lula reiterates that Brazil remains committed to a ceasefire in Gaza

“It is important that the international community commits to a two-state solution (Palestine and Israel) and lives together in security and harmony,” Lula said in his first speech as president of the G20, a group representing the 19 major economies united. the world and the European Union.

In his speech, the president also noted that Brazil continues to mourn the conflict in the Middle East and once again criticized the deaths of women and children.

“The daily violation of humanitarian law is shocking and results in thousands of innocent civilians, especially women and children, becoming innocent because of the war,” denounced the founder of the Workers’ Party.

Brazil's mandate in the G20 will last one year (it ends on November 30, 2024) and it is the first time in the group's history that it holds this position in its current form.

Brazil plans to organize more than 100 working group meetings, held virtually and in person, as well as nearly 20 ministerial meetings over the course of its leadership, culminating in the Summit of Heads of Government and State in Rio de Janeiro on November 18-19, 2024.

The G20's respective finance ministers and central bank authorities will take part in the meeting this Wednesday. Further financial exchanges are planned for tomorrow and Friday.

The Brazilian government has innovated in the interim presidency and will hold meetings in the country's five regions in an attempt to make the G20 a more accessible and representative forum.

Recently, Lula announced that in addition to a bioeconomy initiative, Brazil would set up two task forces: one on hunger and inequality and one on climate change.

The Brazilian chairmanship of the group will have a guiding axis for reducing economic and social inequality between individuals

If we want to make a difference, we must put reducing inequalities at the heart of the international agenda, Lula said.

“All these priorities are contained in the motto of the Brazilian presidency: Building a just world and a sustainable planet,” he emphasized.
