President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said he hoped that current American President Joe Biden could be reelected in the elections later this year.

Lula began by saying that it was not “presumptuous” to say that he would have a candidate in the US elections, in which the Democrat would have to face former President Donald Trump. However, he later stated that Biden represents the “guarantee of the survival of the democratic regime.”

“I hope Biden wins the elections. I hope people can vote for someone they have a greater affinity with. I saw Biden at the factory gate. “Biden’s speech from the beginning to today has been in defense of the world of work,” he said.

Lula gave an interview to RedeTV's “É Notícia” program, which aired on Tuesday evening (27). The conversation took place on the eve of another international trip by the President this Wednesday (28) the President sets off on a threeday trip to the Caribbean, with official engagements in Guyana and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

In Georgetown, the capital of Guyana, the President will attend a special meeting with heads of government from Caricom (Caribbean Community) as a guest.

Guyana is embroiled in a diplomatic dispute with Venezuela over the oilrich Essequibo region. Tensions rose late last year after dictator Nicolás Maduro's regime held a referendum on annexing the region.

Venezuela continues to worry Brazil over Maduro's actions, which threaten the holding of presidential elections originally scheduled for this year. The local court declared opposition candidate María Corina Machado ineligible for election for 15 years.

Lula is expected to have a meeting with Maduro at the second stop of the trip, in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, but the meeting has not been confirmed. The Brazilian President is traveling to the country to attend the Celac (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Summit.
