Lula wants guarantees from Maduro regarding Essequibo and elections, sources say

Lula will travel to both countries to attend the conclusion of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) meeting and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) summit. On the sidelines of the meetings, he will also hold a bilateral discussion with the President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali.

Late last year, Brazil began mediating negotiations between Guyana and Venezuela following a conversation between Lula and Maduro. Although there was no solution to the dispute in sight, Venezuelan speeches that had initially threatened violence and troop movements cooled.

Four negotiating meetings have already taken place in recent months, and if they did not advance solutions, they served as a return to diplomacy. Lula's concern is that the tone could rise again in view of the possible Venezuelan elections.

“The aim is to keep disagreements at a safe level and not allow dangerous situations to arise where one slipup could lead to a conflict,” the source said.

Another topic that should be part of the conversation between the two presidents is the elections in Venezuela, which should be scheduled for this year. In the agreement between the government and the opposition, brokered by the United States with the participation of Brazil, one of the conditions is that the Maduro government schedule the elections for the second half of this year and set the date at least six months in advance.
