Lula will speak with Zelensky in New York about topics he wants to discuss

Lula remains in this city, where he opened the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly with his speech the day before.

In addition to Zelensky, the Brazilian president will also meet with his American counterpart Joe Biden this Wednesday.

According to the former union leader, the request for a meeting between Zelensky and him came from this European country.

The Itamaraty Palace, home of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, offered two dates for the rulers to meet, one of which was accepted by Zelensky.

When asked about expectations for the meeting with the Ukrainian, the Brazilian president explained that the conversation would take place between “two presidents of countries, each with their problems, each with their visions.”

“I will talk about the issues that (Zelensky) wants to talk to me about,” he noted.

The meeting is closed and the press cannot follow the conversation.

TV Globo pointed out that the Brazilian government has the impression that the Ukrainian head of state is looking for support and weapons. However, the former union member wants to bring countries considered neutral in the conflict together for peace negotiations.

Lula and Zelensky never met in person alone. The two spoke by phone last March.

In May, the Ukrainian tried to speak to the founder of the Workers’ Party during the G7 summit in Japan, but the Brazilian government claimed scheduling problems prevented the meeting.

Also this month, the presidency’s special adviser on international affairs, Celso Amorim, was sent to Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, to attend a meeting with Zelensky.

On social media, the Ukrainian president said he told Amorim that the only possible peace plan to end the war was Kiev’s.

He also discussed the “possibility of holding a summit between Ukraine and Latin America” and that he hoped to receive the Brazilian head of state in his country and continue the dialogue.

Lula recently said in Johannesburg that the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine shows the limits of the UN Security Council.

“We stand ready to participate in efforts to achieve a ceasefire and a sustainable and lasting peace,” he said at the 15th summit of the Brics countries, a group made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Analysts assure that since coming to power for the third time on January 1, Lula has insisted on presenting himself as a possible interlocutor for peace between Russians and Ukrainians, but the project is facing resistance, especially in the United States and some European countries.
